You may have finished your visit to the museum, but there are many ways to continue with the story of the Fishermen.
We offer you a series of books published by the Musée des Thoniers.
Volume 1 : Étel 1850/1939 - From sardines to tuna - History of a river
Menhirs and dolmens, bell towers and pardons, remarkable buildings and sailing ships of yesteryear intermingle here to offer you a completely new vision of the ria d'Étel and its heritage, photographed between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century...
Volume 2 : Etel 1939/1958 - The difficult transition from sail to motor
After the first book "Etel de la sardine au thon - 1850-1939", we continue the history of Etel and its region through the period of the Second World War and the rise of the tuna fishing and trawling industries until the event of 3 October 1958.
Volume 3 : Étel 1858/1968 - The apogee of a deep-sea port
At the end of the Second World War, the port of Étel was revived. Its maritime district was created in 1946. The trawling era opened up and propelled Etel towards its peak in the 1960s. Ten years of prosperity before the attraction of Lorient-Keroman.
Volume 4 : Étel 1868/1972 - From a fishing port to a shipping port - The attraction of Lorient
After ten years of prosperity at the end of the war, the fishing port of Etel began to change. After an attempt at revival, Etel's fishing industry turned to Africa and bluefin tuna. Fishing took up residence in Lorient. The industrial trawlers became established. This vast subject could not be covered in the previous works. In the same way, rural life deserved to be given a voice in view of the strong interactions between the world of the sea and the local peasantry.
